As a child therapist, I often wonder what sets apart the children who are able to manage and thrive in environments plagued by adversity,2014. The two-day installatio, abuse and poverty, from those who seem to succumb to it. But, resiliency doesn t have to mean the ability to bounce back from such extremes. Some children are just more flexible, able to pick themselves up and dust themselves off.
It s been 50 years since I was in the 6th grade. I say that because that was probably the best school year I recall as a young boy growing up in the Arkansas Delta. There was a lot going on in 1964. The Beatles were literally rocking this nation by storm. The Arkansas Razorbacks had won their mythical college football championship. The St. Louis Cardinals won their first World Series in 18 years and the nation was trying desperately to recover from the terrible November tragedy from the previous fall the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. At the start of the fall 1964, I was an impressionable 11-year-old. Through the first five years of school it had been pretty much the same routine reading, writing and arithmetic. But when I met Alice Wilson for the very first time, I knew things were going to be quite different. To sum it up, the 1964-65 school year was fun. And at the same time, I learned having fun. Our class was close-knit because that s the way Mrs. Wilson wanted it to be. Everyone got the opportunity to participate and share in a leadership role. Every student in the class, at one time or another got to serve as a class officer. Our science lessons were reinforced with some of the finest educational films available, thanks to her husband, an officer in the U.S. Air Force stationed in nearby Blytheville. Through his access to a great film library, we were able to see documentaries before they aired on the Public Broadcasting Network including the National Education Association award-winning Our Mr. Sun. The play was the thing when Christmas arrived. This was not your ordinary performance in which the students lined up on choir risers and sang a dozen or so Christmas Carols. No,ray ban sunglasses, this was a full-fledged production that was rehearsed almost daily from the week after Thanksgiving right up until show time. Guess who got the lead role? You re right. This old bashful, veteran editor got the role of a very talkative 5-year old, reminiscent of Dennis the Menace. I haven t spoken that many lines in public since that play. Reading was another important part of Mrs. Wilson s curriculum. We had our own library of books that ranged from biographies of famous Americans to the classics. On more than one occasion,www.raybanoutlet.name, she would pick a selection and read segments to us on a daily basis. We simply could not wait until the afternoon when we would put away our geography, math books and spellers to listen to Charlotte s Web. I wrote all of this to remind us all what education was all about. Mrs. Wilson was not only concerned about what we as children needed to learn to be a success in life, she wanted for us to develop a desire to learn and her way to develop that desire was to add fun interaction in our lessons. Page 2 of 2 - She was indeed a unique teacher, polo ralph lauren outlet, a one of a kind. Isn t that the way our Maker wants us to be unique individuals. In this age of test scores, Common Core Standards and No Child Left Behind, isn t it time to return to the basics reading, writing and arithmetic with a smile. I will always remember Mrs. Wilson for what she let us do learn on our own. Her unique personality and approach to teaching made that possible. At one time, like our churches,www.coachfactory.mobi, our school was the heart and soul of the community. People took an interest in what their children accomplished in school. No, being happy isn t the only ingredient to a good education but it is a good foundation on which to start.
